Seattle Symphony-goers thrilled by pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet’s performance in “Turangalîla-Symphonie” last weekend at Benaroya Hall will be glad to know his 1993 recording of Messiaen’s otherworldly masterpiece has just been reissued on Decca. Riccardo Chailly conducts Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, with Takashi Harada on ondes Martenot (an early electronic instrument). The balance between piano, ondes and percussion-enhanced orchestra is near-perfect. Thibaudet returns to town in September when the Seattle Symphony’s masterworks series opens with an all-Ravel program.

Anyone who thinks that the modern high-tech era started in, say, the 1970s might revisit the 1920 play by visionary Czech writer Karel Capek. The R.U.R. title stands for “Rossum’s Universal Robots,” and the play is about a factory turning out artificial humanity — robots (Capek popularized the term) who eventually revolt against their masters. Check it out Monday night at North Seattle Community College thanks to the valuable Enagered Species Project, a free reading series of rarely seen or heard plays. The ineffable poetry of the digital detritus is corralled and composed by the Twitter feed Pentametron, which scours the 140-word missives of the unwitting writers of the Twitter-verse and juxtaposes them in iambic (heroic) couplets — to varying degrees of amusing, bewildering and disquieting effect. “It doesn’t even matter anymore./ i want an Apple ... at the Apple store:)” Find it on Twitter: @pentametron.
