NW Books: A look at contemporary anti-Semitism

New releases

“The State of the Jews: A Critical Appraisal” by Edward Alexander (Transaction Publishers, $24.95). Drawing from history, politics and literature, the author looks at the predicament Jewish people face from contemporary anti-Semitism and hostility toward Israel. Alexander is professor emeritus of English at the University of Washington.

“Because I Said So!” by Ken Jennings (Scribner, $19.99). “Jeopardy!” star Ken Jennings, who lives in the Seattle area, checks out some age-old parenting myths. Does chicken soup really make you feel better? Will watermelon seeds really grow in your stomach? Will bullies go away if you ignore them?

“Tremolo” by Alice Derry (Red Hen Press, $17.95). Peninsula College professor Alice Derry’s newest collection of poetry takes a look at how people are easily shaken by events such as a mother’s death, a daughter leaving home or war and prejudice.

“The Whole Story of Climate” by E. Kirsten Peters (Prometheus Books, $26). Washington State University geologist E. Kirsten Peters describes the geology-based perspective on climate change, focusing on a long history of a constantly changing climate.
