Boeing and its engineering union are suspending negotiations on a new labor agreement until after Jan. 1, according to a statement from federal mediators.

Officials of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) joined the contract negotiations this week in an advisory role. A statement Wednesday said the agency had requested the talks be suspended, and both sides agreed.

“In the interim, the FMCS will be in discussion with the parties to schedule resumption of negotiations,” the brief statement said.

The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA), represents about 23,000 engineers and technical staff who overwhelmingly rejected Boeing’s first contract proposal in October.
