Inside game and 29 points from Brock Motum lift Cougars past Portland

By The Associated Press

PULLMAN — Brock Motum scored 29 points and Royce Woolridge 20 as Washington State beat Portland 72-60 Saturday night.

The Cougars (5-3) outscored the Pilots 32-12 in the paint and had a 45-27 rebounding advantage.

"I wasn't expecting that kind of physicality from Washington State. We got back on our heels, and we struggled to run our offense," Portland coach Eric Reveno said.

Ryan Nicholas had 17 points for Portland (3-4).

The Pilots trailed 39-33 early in the second half, but Washington State started feeding the posts. Portland had no answer for the inside play of Motum, who scored 17 of his 29 points late in the second half.

"He (Motum) earned every point tonight. He got banged around and responded well. I thought we all responded well on offense, but also on defense," said WSU coach Ken Bone.
