Apolo Ohno's 'Dancing' hopes put on ice

By Seattle Times staff

Speed skater Apolo Ohno and NFL legend Emmitt Smith were eliminated from "Dancing With the Stars" in the semifinals of the show's 15th season Tuesday night.

Ohno and Smith — both prior "DWTS" champions — ceded the dance floor to Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson, reality-TV star Melissa Rycroft and soap-opera actress Kelly Monaco.

Ohno, a Northwest native, was dismissed despite scoring a perfect 30 with partner Karina Smirnoff on a rumba danced Monday night to Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror." That performance put Ohno and Smirnoff in third place, out of five remaining couples. But they dropped to the bottom two after the counting of audience votes, which are combined with judges' scores to determine the results.

Host Tom Bergeron, commenting on the outcome, said that with Ohno and Smith's departures, the show had "lost a lot of charisma." The finale will air Monday night, Nov. 26, on ABC.
