Gregoire appoints daughter to Seattle Community Colleges board

Outgoing Gov. Chris Gregoire has appointed her daughter, Courtney Gregoire, to the board of trustees for Seattle Community Colleges.

Gregoire made the appointment Oct. 29, although it was not announced by the college district until Tuesday. Governor's spokesman Jason Kelly, responding by email, wrote that the younger Gregoire — she is 33 — "has more than ample experience to serve on this community college board."

Courtney Gregoire is an attorney with Microsoft, and has worked as a legislative director in the U.S. Senate and deputy chief of staff for the U.S. Department of Commerce. She received her law degree from Harvard, and she is "passionate about education policy," Kelly wrote. He said she had to apply for the position, like other candidates.

Trustees serve for five years, usually meet about once a month and receive no compensation for the work except for expenses, although the post can be a way to burnish a civic résumé.

Gov. Gregoire also appointed Carmen Gayton, a real-estate broker with Windermere Real Estate, to the Seattle trustees. Gayton has served on Achievement Rewards for College Scientists, PONCHO (Patrons of Northwest Civic, Cultural and Charitable Organizations), The Lakeside School and the YMCA. She is the wife of Carver Gayton, retired executive director of the Northwest African American Museum.

Earlier this year, Seattle trustee Constance Rice — wife of former Seattle Mayor Norm Rice — left the board to join the new statewide Student Achievement Council, and trustee Gayatri Eassey left to develop community colleges in India with the help of a Clinton Fellowship.

The posts require state Senate confirmation.
