Washington State rolls past Eastern Washington in season opener

By Seattle Times news services

PULLMAN — Brock Motum scored 23 points to lead the Washington State men's basketball team to a season-opening 88-69 win over Eastern Washington on Saturday night.

The Cougars held a 39-20 lead at halftime, then coasted to the victory.

Mike Ladd, a former Rainier Beach High of Seattle standout, and DaVonte Lacy, from Curtis High in University Place, each scored 15 for the Cougars.

Justin Crosgile scored 28 points to lead Eastern Washington. He was 7 of 17 from three-point range.

Crosgile made five of his three-pointers late in the second half, but it was too little, too late for the Eagles, who struggled from the field most of the night.

Washington State held the Eagles to 34 percent from the field (25 of 72).

The Cougars shot 54 percent from the field, and were 61 percent in the second half.

Washington State had a 47-34 rebounding advantage. D.J. Shelton led the Cougars with 12 rebounds.
