Republican Wyman continues GOP hold on secretary of state

Washington state may favor Democrats, but the next secretary of state will continue the GOP's nearly 50-year domination of the office. Republican Kim Wyman became the winner of the close race Saturday when her Democratic opponent, Kathleen Drew, conceded.

The Associated Press reported that Wyman led Drew with 51 percent of the vote.

She will replace fellow Republican Sam Reed, who is retiring after 12 years in office. The last Democrat to hold the post, Victor Meyers, lost his bid for re-election in 1964.

"I'm very humbled and very pleased at the outcome, given how Tuesday night went for my team," Wyman said.

Democrats captured every other statewide race on the ballot.

Wyman, the Thurston County auditor, campaigned on her experience conducting more than 80 elections at the county level. The secretary of state's main job is to oversee state and local elections. The office is also responsible for registering and licensing private corporations.

"This year I think it really did come down to credentials and experience," Wyman said.

Drew is a former state senator from Issaquah.

"I know (Kim Wyman) will carry forward Washington's tradition of fair and impartial elections, and I am optimistic that she will work on measures to remove barriers and increase voter participation," Drew said in her concession statement.

Wyman said her priorities include development of a one-stop, online portal to make it easier for businesses to connect with state government.
