City reassigns prosecutor-wife of serial-rape suspect

Supervising Assistant City Prosecutor Jennifer Grant, the wife of serial-rape suspect and Seattle attorney Danford "Dan" Grant, has been reassigned to responsibilities that "do not entail courtroom prosecutorial work," the Seattle City Attorney's Office announced Wednesday.

Days after her husband was arrested Sept. 24 in connection with the rape of a massage therapist, Jennifer Grant moved his SUV from near the Greenwood massage clinic where the attack occurred, according to a search-warrant affidavit.

The black 2009 Honda Pilot wasn't at Grant's home or office when police served search warrants at those locations, looking for condoms, a folding knife, cellphones, a wrist watch and other evidence, the affidavit says.

It wasn't until Oct. 21 that an attorney representing Jennifer Grant contacted a detective and told him where the black SUV could be found: It was parked at an intersection in Wedgwood, four miles from the massage clinic and about 10 blocks from the Grants' home, the affidavit says.

The SUV has since been moved to a police-evidence facility.

"Although there has been absolutely no indication of an active criminal investigation, we felt it prudent to temporarily reassign her duties," Wednesday's announcement said. "It is extremely important that we continue to maintain the appearance of integrity here at the Seattle City Attorney's Office."

Jennifer Grant was responsible for supervising a team of trial prosecutors in the city's veteran-treatment and mental-health courts, and she regularly appeared before judges in Seattle Municipal Court, said Kimberly Mills, a spokeswoman for City Attorney Pete Holmes.

While Grant will continue working in the office's Criminal Division, she will "have a reduced supervisory role," according to Mills. "She will have other duties that are being worked out."

Dan Grant, 47, is charged with seven felony counts, including four counts of first-degree rape, for alleged attacks on five women who work at massage-therapy offices in Seattle, Bellevue and Shoreline. He also is charged with one count of attempted second-degree rape, one count of first-degree burglary and one count of second-degree rape.

He was released from the King County Jail a week ago after posting $1 million bail and is on electronic home detention.

According to the affidavit, police determined Jennifer Grant used a key card to access the parking garage for her husband's downtown law office Sept. 27, three days after his arrest. She was driving a different car, the affidavit says.

Through her attorney, Jennifer Grant claimed to have only removed the garage key card from her husband's vehicle, which she later replaced, the affidavit says. The document says Jennifer Grant has refused to speak with police.

Danford Grant's attorney, Richard Hansen, told KIRO-TV that Jennifer Grant had parked the black SUV far from the house because she was "being hounded by the media." He told KIRO that nobody was trying to hide the vehicle.

In a declaration filed in King County Superior Court in October seeking reduced bail for her husband, Jennifer Grant detailed her family's financial problems — they have significant credit-card debt and little equity in their home, which they may have to sell — and referenced her husband's ongoing battle with depression.

"As a prosecutor and a woman, I am well aware of the seriousness of the allegations against my husband," she wrote in her declaration, arguing that her husband is taking the charges seriously and will abide by all conditions of release. "... We have no weapons in the home, and Dan has always been a kind and gentle person the whole time I have known him."
