Washington gymnasts upset top-ranked UCLA

The 22nd-ranked Washington gymnastics team pulled a huge upset in its first home meet of 2012, knocking off undefeated and top-ranked UCLA 195.350-194.600 on Friday night at Edmundson Pavilion.

The Huskies led after every rotation and beat the Bruins for just the third time in school history and the first since 2004.

Ruby Engreitz won the all-around with a season-high score of 39.325, and set a career high in winning the floor with a 9.875. Engreitz actually set season highs on every event, including a 9.8 on vault, 9.85 on bars and a 9.8 on beam, where she tied for the win.

Teammate Aliza Vaccher finished second in the all-around with a 38.875 total.

Cougars' Aden to miss ASU game

Washington State announced that Faisal Aden will not be able to play at Arizona State on Saturday because of a knee injury.

Aden was injured in the first half of Thursday's loss at Arizona.

Coach Ken Bone said that Aden appeared to have a sprained knee and possibly an injury to his MCL.

His injury will be re-evaluated when the team returns to Pullman.

Track and field

The first day of the UW Invitational at the Dempsey Indoor was capped off by strong showings from Washington's distance medley relays, both running times that rank in the top 10 in school history.

The women's quartet of Christine Babcock, Jordan Carlson, Baylee Mires and Justine Johnson clocked in in 11 minutes, 18.34 seconds, the third-best time in school history, finishing second to Brigham Young.

The men's group of Charlie Williams, Maurice McNeal, Brad Whitley and Joey Bywater ran to a win in 9:41.17, which ranks 10th in school history.

Elsewhere, Lisa Uhl of the Oregon Track Club won the 5,000 in 15:29.85, the fastest time in the world this year.

Other gymnastics

Seattle Pacific's Stephanie Wagner placed third on the balance beam (9.675) as the Falcons (189.275) finished third in a tri-meet with California (191.750) and host UC Davis (191.600).

Women's tennis

Washington opened its season with a 5-2 victory over 32nd-ranked San Diego in the first round of ITA National Team Indoor Championships qualifying in Berkeley, Calif.

Denise Dy recorded her 90th career singles victory, becoming the fifth Husky to reach that plateau, as she bested Stephanie Hoffpauir at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-0.

Men's basketball

Jordan Call had 13 points and seven rebounds in leading No. 11 Northwest University (20-2, 10-2 Cascade Colleagiate) defeated host Eastern Oregon 61-57.

Women's basketball

Eighth-ranked Eastern Oregon held Northwest University's leading scorer, Jessalyn Jackson, to just five points in a 76-74 win over the visiting Eagles. Domi Mendezona led Northwest U. (9-11, 5-7 CCC) with 19 points and six assists. Jackson also chipped in 11 rebounds.

Notes

Keidane McAlpine has been named women's soccer coach at Washington State. McAlpine spent the last six seasons at Auburn as part of a staff that guided the Tigers to six straight NCAA postseason appearances.
